
Symphony 101
Symphony 101 is a six-week, six-lecture adult learning program that will take you on a journey to the heart of the greatest composers and the NMSO.
The first Symphony 101 session of the 2007-08 Season takes place Oct. 3 - Nov. 14, 2007. Schedule of activites includes:
Wednesday, October 3:
Carol Hopper, respected music historian and lecturer, will discuss the music of Robb and Shostakovich which will be performed by Guillermo Figueroa and the NMSO on October 5, 6, & 7.
Thursday, October 4:
Dress Rehearsal of NMSO at Popejoy Hall. Program: Symphony No. 7, Dvorak; Adagio for Strings, Barber; Dances from Taxco, Robb; Festive Overture, Shostakovich.
Wednesday, October 10:
NMSO's music director will discuss the music of Elgar, Liszt and Bartok which will be performed by Maestro Figueroa and the NMSO on October 26, 27, & 28.
Wednesday, October 17:
Valerie Potter, NMSO principal flute, discusses her role in the orchestra and will give the principal flutist's perspective on upcoming performances, including Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra.
Wednesday, October 24:
Artemus Edwards, UNM Music Professor Emeritus, discusses the sonata form comparing earlier works of Mozart to his later compositions.
Thursday, October 25:
Dress Rehearsal of NMSO at Popejoy Hall. Program: Cockaigne Overture, Elgar; Piano Concerto No. 1, Liszt; Concerto for Orchestra, Liszt. Arnaldo Cohen, piano; Guillermo Figueroa, conductor.
Wednesday, November 7:
Roger Melone, NMSO resident conductor, will discuss Belshazzar's Feast, by William Walton which will be performed by the NMSO and Chorus on November 16, 17, & 18.
Wednesday, November 14:
Artemus Edwards will discuss program music including Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.
Classes are 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Robertson & Sons Violin Shop. $35 per person or $6 per class. Call 881-8999 to register. Class size limited.
